April 2011 Earnings Report

Wednesday, May 4, 2011 10:21

This month I feel like dancing like a three year old. :D

Finally, I feel like I’m making some traction forward, after being “stuck” at the $2000 a month level for several months now. Every program I participate in was up this month, although AdSense was the one in which I saw the greatest growth – due primarily to the new sites I’m building based on the AdSense 100K Blueprint.

Here are the numbers for April:

AdSense: $757.15 (Last month = $598.21) +$158.94
ClickBank: $1019.38  (Last month = $940.87) +$78.51
Amazon: $215.25 (Last month = $170.61) +$44.64
Other Affiliate Programs: $148.35 (Last month = $108.96) +$39.39
Consulting: $300.00  (Last month = $300.00) +0

Gross Earnings: $2440.18 (Last month = $2,128.65) +$311.48

Unlike last month, when I saw a slight increase of earnings due to taking on some SEO consulting work, this month’s increase was all from my passive income streams as well.

Expenses this month were down as well, meaning my net earnings (before taxes) were up as well. Here are my expenses for April:

Outsourcing (writers, fiverr, article spinning, banner creation):  $196.00 (Last month=$461.00)
Backlinking Tools and Subscriptions
(Sick Submitter, decaptcher fees, proxies, homepage backlinks): $99.96 (Last month=$123.96)
Other
(domain purchases and renewals, hosting, Aweber): $228.85 (Last month=$229.05)

Total Expenses: $524.81 (Last month=$814.01)

This means my net earnings for this month was $1915.32 (versus $1314.64 last month) – an increase of $600.68!

However, although a combination of an increase in earnings and a decrease in expenditures led to a nice boost in overall income, there are some downsides as well.

First of all, having fewer expenses is not necessarily a “good thing” in my book. Unfortunately, a combination of my having less personal time to work, not having a VA on staff, and having less money to invest this past month meant that I wasn’t building sites at the rate I would like to be doing so (at least one a week). In fact, I only got two new sites up this month (both were Amazon product sites). I definitely would like to be investing in and building my business more than what I accomplished during this past month.

Second, I am very uncertain that these earnings will be sustained at this level for next month. This is because I decided to take a “calculated risk” this past week with one of my best earning Clickbank sites. This site usually brings in about $700 a month in revenue (last month it was $685.73, to be exact). The site ranks quite high for a very competitive keyword – usually sitting at position #3 for a keyword that has 14,800 exact global monthly searches.

Since this one site is such a huge earner for me, I’ve been very reluctant to backlink this site for months now (I did do some on page optimization a couple of months ago which helped with conversions, however). But to put it quite simply: I didn’t think I could afford for it to “dance” in the SERPs for several weeks.

However I also know that the backlinks it currently has will, over time, start to fall away and the rankings it has will eventually slip as well. Also, although I have been earning well from the site at the #3 slot, if I were to grab the #2 or even the #1 slot, what I could potentially earn from the site would obviously be much higher.

So, last week, I decided that I am now at a level of earnings where I can afford to have this site dance in the SERPS, and I started a backlink campaign. And as expected, the site is now dancing wildly and sales are way down.

Today I’m sitting at position #9 for my main keyword, and a screen shot of my ClickBank account shows some of the financial impact: last week I earned over $200 less than the previous week from ClickBank.

I must admit I’m also a little nervous about this move since Google’s algo seems to be shifting on an almost daily basis and it’s hard to tell what this means in terms of future backlink building strategies so far. Hopefully I haven’t knocked this site down for too long (or even permanently)!

Still, as with any business and investment, you do need to take some calculated risks from time to time with the hopes of a larger payoff in the end. And even if this site does not come back any time soon, I do have other sites that have some good earning potential, which will hopefully make up for the difference in the near future.

Also, I do have other ClickBank sites that bring in some earnings as well, so ClickBank won’t be completely dead. This past month I actually had eight ClickBank sites bring in sales (including the one above), with a total of 57 sales (versus 51 for March) and four refunds. I had 3,972 total hops in April (versus 3,729 in March) and my conversion rate was 1 in 74 (versus 1 in 79 in March). So there is some good growth with my ClickBank sites, despite the anticipated drop in my earnings for May.

However, as mentioned earlier, my AdSense sites are where I’m seeing the most growth at the moment. April was my best month for AdSense earnings to date (up over $150 from the previous month). During the past three months I have built seven new site following the AdSense 100K Blueprint plan, five of which are bringing in regular earnings. This month alone those five new sites brought in a total of $97.78 in earnings. I also saw an increase from a gardening blog I have (the first AdSense site I ever built), that tends to do very well in the springtime to early summer (this despite the fact that I haven’t touched it for over a year now). That site brought in over $100 for April as well. However, my highest earning AdSense site still has not shown much improvement (earning just under $400 in April), although traffic is up a little bit to the site. My daily average was up to $25.24 (versus $19.30 last month). I’m seeing a lot more days over the $40 level now, and for the first time ever, I didn’t have a single day this month that earned less than $10 from AdSense! (You can see a screen shot of my daily earnings here).

Amazon is also doing a bit better this month too. This month I had my best month since last December. The increase is due primarily to having a few more sales this month and making sales of some higher priced items when compared to last month. None of my new Amazon sites have produced any sales as of yet, although their traffic and rankings are climbing. Here is a screenshot of my April Amazon earnings:

What I’m Working On Right Now And My Goals For May

Much of my time and effort right now is focused on building links to my new AdSense and Amazon sites, plus doing the SEO consulting work I’ve taken on. Currently most of my AdSense sites are on page two for many of their keywords, and I’m hoping that in the next month or so to get them on page one for most of the keywords and by month six or so, to try to hit the top three for at least one of the main keywords. Given their earnings so far, I believe they have some great potential down the road!

This past month I also did a little domain shopping, picking up several PR2 domains (costing between $10-15 each) to add to my private blog posting network. Currently I have seven blogs in this network, and I plan to get the total number to over ten for May.

I also recently joined a free blog posting network that is similar to BuildMyRank or Blog Blueprint. It is a blog posting co-op, where members contribute high PR blogs of their own to the network and in exchange get to post articles to other member’s blog. If you have some PR2 or PR3 blogs that you are willing to add to the network, this is a great way to get some free links back to your websites (they currently have over 1200 high PR blogs in the network). If you are interested in learning more, you can read about it on this thread at the backlink’s forum:

http://backlinksforum.com/backlinks-classified-ads/2587-authority-link-network-free-high-google-page-ranking-blog-network.html

However, I am feeling really overwhelmed right now with my backlink building tasks and I do need to hire someone soon to work in that capacity. However, right now I don’t even feel like I have the energy to hunt for someone to hire and then train them – so for May I may rely more strongly on Fiverr and similar venues to outsource some backlink building work.

I am fortunate in that I have a great writer on staff: Ben from the FreeStyle Life blog has been writing my Amazon reviews for me (he’s also looking for some more work and has a fascinating personal story about his journey as well, so do check out his blog if you are interested).

I am really uncertain about my earning goals for May. A lot will depend if that ClickBank site comes back in the SERPs soon or not. Still, I can’t bear having a financial goal that is less than the previous month, so I am going to be positive and hope that the site returns soon in the SERPs, that I see continued growth with my AdSense and Amazon revenue and that I FINALLY hit the $3000 month mark for May.

Whew. Well, thanks for reading! How was your April?

inspiring to see a high percentage net gain in one month. is the adsense blueprint really worth it? compared to some of the more pricey alternatives it seems like a throwaway amount but I always find it hard to gauge worth with so many ‘how to’ plans out there. grats keep up the good work

Thanks Jim. Regarding the A100K Blueprint, I actually think it is underpriced given what it offers, but it is also geared more towards those who are a beginning level versus more experienced AdSense site builders. So if you have built plenty of AdSense sites, you may not find it as useful as someone who is just starting out.

If you are going to use it, I strongly suggest you consider joining the forum as well, as there is really a lot of additional useful information and resources available there, and you can chat directly with the writers as well and get site reviews from them too if you wish. I really can’t think of any other IM tutorial program that offers as many resources and information as cheaply as they do…

Great job on the income! It’s a bit comforting to see that its not just my adsense that jumps up and down every day. Even though the average is moving up from month to month…the low days can make anyone feel a bit uncomfortable.

I also think the A100K Blueprint was worth it… took what I needed from it and mixed it with my own strategy.

    Thanks,

Thank Tom. I agree with you about the A100K blueprint – I certainly felt I needed to tweak the plan when it came to building backlinks – their plan simply wasn’t aggressive enough for me.

I do have to remember to check out your blog more often. Your commentluv post looks great! I’m off to read… :)

    Michelle,

I mainly created the blog to keep my WF posts from being closed or disappearing. It’s hard for me to understand how you do it, working at the business and maintaining the blog. Mine is so neglected (I feel, since am not a blogger at heart) but a lot of people have been contacting me and enjoying the posts so I try my best.

How are you doing with the sites that have a lot of profile links thrown at them? There are a lot of stories where it seems that Google is starting to penalize them. I’ve seen it a bit with a few of my sites where I tested this theory by throwing a couple hundred profiles at around 10 newish sites over the course of a month or two and they did drop a few spots within the last few weeks.

    Thanks,

    Tom

That’s really annoying about the WF. I have to admit I used to go there a lot, and now rarely. I just don’t find much of use to me there anymore – I much prefer the backlinks forum. Your blog post was great, BTW, and I hope to go through more back posts soon. But it is challenging. I don’t update this blog nearly as much as I would like to – but it is my hope that once I have more VA’s back on staff, and have more time, that I can post here more often.

I definitely think something interesting is going on right now with profile links, but I can’t really tell what. IMO, they haven’t been penalized, but something has been changed to make sites dance much more when you use them. Around the April 25th, several sites that I had recently been linking pretty heavily with profile links dropped for nearly a week in the SERPS. However, they all did come back about a week later, and in general, they were ranking a slot or two higher when they returned. So, I’m still using profile links right now, and they still seem to work (I still see results from them). But I’ve noticed that when I use them my sites definitely dance around (drop in the SERPs) for at least a week or two before they come back again. And when they come back, the boost seems smaller than it used to be.

I’m doing quite a bit of testing right now myself. My guess is that they have been devalued a little and that there has been something put in the algo to filter out sites temporarily that have just received a lot of profile links (such as a xrumer blast), but that in the end they do still work, but that you might need to actually use more to get the results you want. I also think you need to really be sure you have a diverse link portfolio before using them. However, if I reach a different conclusion myself after some more testing, I’ll definitely let people know…

Do check out the backlinks forum if you haven’t already – much more useful and much better info there in my experience, at least for what I’m doing.

    Great stuff Michelle!

This is one of the most useful income reports that I’ve read because you not only detail the income itself (well done for the increase btw!) but also what’s happening on the back end.

I especially found the dilemma over “calculated risk” on your high earning Clickbank site interesting.  It’s these kind of issues that we all deal with day-to-day but they rarely get talked about in public.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

I’m hoping I won’t be kicking myself a month from now regarding that site, but I do firmly believe taking some risk (within reason) is needed from time to time in most business ventures. I’m actually already seeing it start to creep back up (it’s at #8 today), so I’m hoping the dancing won’t go on to long. And it would be GREAT to snag the #2 or even #1 slot. :)

Nice earnings, Michelle! My April was pretty sweet, I thought it would tank but not quite. You beat me in Amazon, though – since I’ve relied too much on web 2.0′s…I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things since vacation, only thing I really did was run SENukeX and PaidBackLinks.com – but for all that, thankfully things still moved in the right direction.

Anyhow, I’m curious about the “new” Google algo change you keep mentioning – I haven’t seen it myself. I’m curious if you think they targeted forum profile links? That’s the main difference between you and me as far as links go it seems – I’ve never been forum profile heavy.

What do you think? I’m wondering why you and others are seeing something I’m not – and not to be a jerk about it or bragging, I’m just wondering why the difference?

Personally the only thing I can see different is the type of links – but I dunno, since Google isn’t shy about announcing attacks on a particular form of link spam…So it’s hard to say for sure.

Whatever the case, I just can’t wait to see your May earnings – you keep building ‘em up I’m just waiting for you to say, “What just happened? I doubled my income…” Or something like that (after which point I fully expect this to become your vacation blog – taking a year off or something nuts after your incredibly hard and steadfast work ethic: wow you’re kicking butt, I don’t care what you say).

Keep it up, you’re inspiring as ever.

Good to hear April turned out nice for you, James. I was wondering… Regarding the most recent *possible* algo change, I noticed a small dive around the 25th that a lot of people thought may have targeted “low quality” links, including forum profile links. However, all my sites which dropped on the 25th came back on the 29th, so I’m doubtful. However, it does seem to me that in the past month or two it is taking longer for all forms of backlinks to work and that Google is a bit slower to respond and longer to “dance” when you do any backlink building. But maybe I’m just being impatient… :)

I will say that profile links are still working for me, although I won’t completely dismiss the possibility that they have been devalued a little. However, I also see other forms of backlinking, especially article marketing, to have similar slow results. As I said above, I really don’t know what to think, and I’m still sticking to my regular plans until I have some good evidence otherwise.

I’m waiting for that day too! It can happen, of course, and it has happened to me in the past. One day a site you have working months on might suddenly shoot up to #1 for a great keyword and then the sales start pouring in. I would love to have more of those days, of course, and hopefully will see another jump like that again in the near future.

I think you’re moving in the right direction with private high PR network. By the way, that network you joined really rocks ;)

I’m uncertain of my May incomes as well, totally agree with you here. I’m now having a mix of top ranked site for product that don’t convert, and sites that made me good money but dropped by google… If not for these 2 drawbacks, I’d be making $10000 easily…

OK, we can do it and will do it.

I have no doubt that we will both hit that magical 10K monthly mark at some point as long as we continue working at it. Or, as my three year old frequently says (quoting Bob the Builder):

Another great month for you! I have a feeling that by the end of the year you are going to be absolutely killing it. I have a site that is about 8 months old & was ranking on the 1st page for a few keywords with no backlinks. Well last month I decided to throw some backlinks at it to see if I could get it to #1 and of course it has now disappeared. It only made about $50 from Amazon a month but still frustrating when this happens. Hopefully your Clickbank doesn’t do too much of a dance for ya.

Thanks Tiffany. That is too bad about your Amazon site, hopefully it will come back soon too. Losing nearly $700 a month in revenue is going to be a big hit if mine doesn’t return soon. But it could easily earn twice that amount if it takes the #1 slot (which will actually be quite tough). Still, there are other sites in the works too. I certainly hope I don’t disappoint you at the end of the year. :)

Impressive stuff Michelle. You’re right about the investing less money isn’t always a good thing, even though it has resulted in an instant net gain. As the saying goes – “You have to spend money to make money.” ;)

I’m pretty sure your site will come back out of its dance. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Don’t you think it’s better to put it into a dance yourself, by being proactive and knowing it’s going to come out stronger… or would you rather it slowly drop off the page before you start a new backlinking campaign simply because you’re scared of losing a few sales? I believe you chose the right option.

Thank you very much for the shoutout too! Traffic increased and produced one of my busiest days in terms of visitors to my personal blog :)

Of your sites that have dropped (you may have seen my comment on Clayton’s blog about this), have a look at your Bounce Rate and average times spent on your site. It’s also rumoured the big G. is factoring these into their quality controls when returning SERPs to the end user.

Overall, an excellent month, and good luck for May!

Thanks Ben for your comments. You are absolutely right that it feels empowering to be controlling the situation (to what extent I can) rather than just reacting to what the big G throws at me. I’m glad the site is dancing now and not a couple of months ago, when the timing would have been much worse and the money was much more needed.

Of course, taking a planned pay cut isn’t fun and it limits my ability to build and hire at the rate I want. :(

I just saw your comment about the bounce rate, and I know that this is something people have speculated about in the past. I have to admit I’m not fully convinced this is it, although it could be. However, I did look at the rate for many of my sites, and most fall between 50-75%. But there is so much variety depending on what the page is trying to do. I don’t really see any pattern myself here – i.e. sites with a higher bounce rate don’t seem to rank lower, in fact, many are my highest producing sites. Still, something I will try to keep an eye on. Thanks for your comments, and I hope you gain a few new readers on your blog as well. I really enjoy my visits there… :)

Just a thought on the bounce thing. Visitors going from a SERP to web page, then bouncing off it elsewhere, I don’t think that’s taken much into account. If a user bounces off a page onto something completely different, then there’s a good chance that user found what they were looking for on the first result they clicked on. This is surely what Google is aiming for?
However, it’s a different matter if the user bounces back to the SERP to click on another result and carry on their search.

I’m glad you enjoy your visits to my site. From today you should enjoy them even more, as I’ve made things a lot easier to navigate, and basically given the whole thing an overhaul.
    I’ve installed feedburner too.
As for the custom logo, I made that too :) (I acutally really like that). Enjoy! :)

The blog module is weak and along with the scraper as they either will not scrape the right pages, will not submit properly or work tremendously slow.

Hi Tom – I use Sick daily, in fact, several times a day. I’ve never used the sick scraper feature or the blog commenting feature (both which are new, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are still working out the bugs), however. But I use scrapebox for those things. If you don’t use profile links, probably it’s of limited value to you. But I still use them (a lot) and find it invaluable.

I do use it for social bookmarking, although that’s not it’s strongest feature. Also, I use it to submit articles to some blogs such as the ELGG format. All in all, it works great for me.

I tend to use the best tools for the job, but if you are short on resources, I think it is still a great deal at $20 a month for a profile link builder, article submitter, directory submitter, bookmarking builder and so forth (and now blog commentator and scraper). There are better tools for many of those processes, of course, but I think for someone looking to pay very little and is willing to put in the time and effort to learn how to really use it, it is an amazing tool.

Just found you from James’s blog, and as I’m in need of a decent writer for my Amazon review site, just popped off an email to “Ben”.

Looks like you do quite a variety of back linking, whereas I’m pretty much staying with a couple of methods, however they seem to be working well. I have been hearing snippets of one (BMR) having lost some effectiveness post Panda, but it’s hard to gauge when you are using multiple methods.

Thanks for stopping by Bruce! I haven’t really used BMR myself (except the 10 day trial). I’m using a similar, but free network (if you contribute a high PR blog to the network) through the Authority Link Network, however. It seems to be working well for me, but in the end, I think diversity is really key when it comes to backlink methods.

Wow at your Clickbank stats! methinks I’m going to have to get a cup of coffee and spend a couple of hours reading your archive to look for clickbank tips.

My difficulty is always choosing the product – I’m  allergic to the MMO niche, but Clickbank doesn’t seem to offer many products for normal people.

Thanks TeaTree. Those ClickBank stats won’t be nearly so impressive this month, but AdSense is going through the roof! :)

I think there are definitely a few gems in the CB marketplace. But in general, I would suggest finding a product that really helps people solve a problem. There are a lot of products for sale there that I myself use, for example, including the A100K blueprint and MicroNiche finder. So it certainly isn’t all bad.

I found you on Dave Zen Duck blog. You have a lot of great information. I am not a blog junkie, but if hang out at Zen Duck, then I know that you are a high caliber person. I love reading your writing. I hope too see you around in Cyber space!

I ditched a lot of the same tools as you. I love Sick Submitter. It’s “Sick!”. After nearly falling fast asleep using Angela’s I could not take it anymore until I found sick.

    Cheers to you!

Thanks Mark. I can completely related to you about Angela’s links – I remember spending HOURS doing links from her packets when I was first starting out! Hope to see you soon over at ZenDuck! :)
