Free Tools Friday: Budget Backlinking System
Friday, July 23, 2010 3:22Budget Backlinking System: How To Backlink Your Sites Like a Pro For Under $20 a Month
I mentioned in an earlier post that I have recently entered into a mentoring relationship with someone who is fairly new to internet marketing, and you can really thank him for this post. Recently he asked about what I thought would be the best way for him to backlink his sites given limited resources, and I gave him the following suggestions. He suggested that others reading this blog might find this information of use as well, so I’m taking his advice and publishing my suggestions here as well.
One of the major challenges for people starting out in internet marketing – myself included (last year) – is that there are so many backlink producing systems to choose from, and when you have both limited experience and funds, using and choosing between them can quickly become both overwhelming and pricey.
When I first started out, I stuck to free systems almost exclusively – mainly because that was all I could afford. Although I have invested much of my earnings back into my business, it took about six months before I was earning enough to afford many of the tools and services I was interested in – and I’m still not able to purchase everything I want to use or try out. I do use a few services that have a pretty hefty monthly fee and whose results I feel merit paying those fees (UAW, Blog Blueprint and The Link Juicer), but I also believe that you can create a pretty effective backlinking system using only free or very cheap services and resources.
One of the things to keep in mind when creating your Budget Backlinking System is that you need link diversity. By diversity, I mean that you should try to get backlinks from a variety of different sources. For this budget backlinking system, I’m relying on four different kinds of links:
- Article Directory Links
- Blog Links
- Profile Links
- Social Bookmarking Links
1) Article Directories. Manually submit articles that link back to your website to one or two of the top article directories. EzineArticles is one of the most powerful article directories you can post to and each article allows you to put two backlinks in your resource box. GoArticles is probably my second choice, although you may want to backlink your GoArticles to make sure they get found and indexed by Google. But submitting just to EzineArticles may be enough. Try submitting four or five articles to Ezine Articles with backlinks to your site, and see what happens. If you move some, but not enough, submit another five (and so forth).
For even more article directory backlinks, you might also want to take advantage of the one month trial to JetSubmitter. One bonus is that you get access to the JetSpinner for free when you subscribe to JetSubmitter, and you will be able to continue to use the JetSpinner after you cancel your membership. Just be sure to remember to cancel your membership before your free trial is up! After doing the JetSubmitter free trial, you might then want to take advantage of the $1 UAW trial for a month. That would give you at least two months of article submissions for almost free! Each service should allow you to spin and submit one article to hundreds of different article directories (although they will often be low PR article directories).
2) Blog Article Links. Use the Free Traffic System to submit your spun articles to their blog network as well. Each article you submit (and is accepted) will be published on up to thirty blogs in their system. The FreeTrafficSystem uses a slightly different spyntax than JetSubmitter or Unique Article Wizard, so what I have done in the past is paste the articles into a simple text file, and then use the find and replace all function to switch the { to [spin] and } to [/spin]. It takes only a minute, and your ready to submit the same spun articles you sent to JetSubmitter and UAW to FTS. As the name suggests, the Free Traffic System is completely free to use at the basic level (which is all you really need, I think).
3) Profile Links. Use Sick Submitter and the free profile link packets available on their forum to create forum profile links back to your websites. It is the fastest and easiest way to generate profile links that I’ve found so far (and I’ve used a lot of different methods!), and a regular monthly subscription costs only $19 a month (right now – although I think they may be raising the price soon for new members). You will find many different link packages containing thousands of free profile links to use with Sick Submitter on the user’s forum.
Although there may be debates in some quarters about forum profile links, I’ve found them to be very powerful. In fact, they can easily be too powerful, so use them in moderation on a new site or one that has little link diversity. See my discussion of how I backlink my new sites for suggestions on how to do this a bit more safely, but do expect some “dancing” in the rankings (and sometimes even disappearing) for many days or even weeks when creating profile links. The good news, however, is that in my experience when they return from their dancing, they return much stronger and much higher than before.
4) Social Bookmarking Links. I’ve been using the free version of Onlywire.com (you need to put their logo on one of your websites to use it for free), but there are many other free, and possibly better, services out there (for example, IMAutomator might be a good option). At the very least, however, manually bookmark your articles and posts using Digg, Reddit, Mixx or similar services. It’s great if you can get some do-follow social bookmarks, but since a mixture of both do-follow and no-follow links looks good to Google, I tend to use both when it comes to Social Bookmarking.
These four sources should keep you happily backlinking away for under $20 a month. However, if you want even more diversity, there are many other options to consider as well. For example, if there are some blogs you know of that are relevant to your website (or even if not), you can do some blog commenting (“do-follow” blogs are best). Creating an RSS feed mixing some of the backlinks you are creating or of your website post links can help as well (IceRocket is one good free option to do this). You might also want to throw some free directory links into the mix as well (although I personally have not found these to be of much use). However, at the very least, try using the four I suggested above, and develop a consistent system to track your backlinking efforts. I’m guessing you will see some good results in the near future!

James – He, he. Well, you’ve got a lot of tools in your toolbox already, so I’m not worried about how you’ll be doing in the rankings!
Clayton – Good to see you as always. I haven’t used IM Automator yet, but I agree, it looks pretty cool! Let me know if you try it out and how it works for you.

thanks for the info michelle. i haven’t submitted to an article directory yet but i will soon. I don’t know if i should write articles on my own and submit them manaully at first, or go ahead and invest in a spinner at the same time?

John – Well, if I were you, I’d consider signing up for the free JetSubmitter trial, which gets you lifetime access to the JetSpinner. The trial won’t cost you anything as long as you cancel it before the month is up (and you can take advantage of it during that time as well to submit your articles to hundreds of directories for free). It does take a bit of time to learn how to spin articles, but I think it’s worth the effort.

Dear Michelle,
I am so blessed to found your blog, especially this post about budget backlinking strategies. I am still a beginner doing my affiliate marketing journey, and budget sometimes is a major factor here. Now, I am compiling information from other bloggers too about how they implement their backlinking blueprint, and what I read from them, they also use UAW and Blog Blueprint. Maybe it’s not coincidence that I have read Joseph Archibald and Pat Flynn posts about their experience with these tools. Do you think how long should I use the UAW and Blog Blueprint in order to boost a new website’s rank on Google? Maybe this is too broad, because it depends on many things like what is your niche and how competitive the niche is. But, maybe you can share your experience.
I also like what you did to reveal your techniques and make a daily basis journal on your online business journey. This is what I need, because as a beginner I really bombarded with so much information ,BUT there’s no real or clear examples about how to do it. There’s a difference between read theories, and how to implement it.
Thanks again.

Thanks Stella for such a nice message, and I’m really glad you found this post of use. It is frustrating to see how easy it is for people new in the business to become overwhelmed by information and the programs marketed to them. I think for those who start out, you need to be real careful about what you buy until you have a good handle on the basics of SEO and internet marketing. That said, I have a lot of respect for what Joseph and Pat write, and I think you should do well if you follow Joseph’s example.

There are a few things I should say now about this post – as it was several months ago that I wrote it. First, I still think UAW is a very good service, but at $67 a month I wouldn’t consider it a “budget” backlinking service. I recently decided to instead use Article Marketing Robot, which does many of the same things as UAW, but has a one time fee of $80. I’ve only been using it a short while, and it would be hard for me to say yet if it is as effective as UAW, but my guess is that it will have very similar results (I have seen a nice jump in several sites since starting the service).
Second, in my experience, I saw some really dramatic jumps using Blog Blueprint and I would guess you would see the same. However, I know thought several of their blogs were deindexed by Google and although I imagine they have addressed this problem by now, you should check with others to make sure the network is still working well. Also, although you will see a nice jump initially with BB, your links will slowly drop off over time and you will need to replace them three to four months months down the road. I think a good strategy with BB is to use it to give your sites a nice initial boost and then spend the next few months continuing to build links to the site so that when the BB links drop off you will be able to hold onto the rankings that BB gave you.
What I’ve decided to do is to build by own high PR blog network that I use exclusively so I can keep my links on the front page of the blog. That is more of an “advanced” backlink techniques, which you can read about in Terry Kyle’s book Backlinks Hydra (I’m not an affiliate, BTW, and the book is a little expensive at $97, but it’s the best thing you can read and purchase on building backlinks to your site, in my opinion).
Anyway, thanks for your comments again! They are much appreciated.
Michelle
