My Backlink Strategy: New Sites

I’ve had several questions about how I backlink my sites. In all honesty, my backlinking strategy has changed a lot over the past few months and it differs depending on the site’s age, how competitive the keywords are and other factors. But I am developing a standard system for backlinking the new sites I am creating right now which I thought I would share.

One of the key strategies for me when developing backlinks is establishing link diversity. I want my backlinks to come from a variety of sources to look natural. Also, for my new websites, I want the backlinks to start out slowly for the first few weeks, again to mimic natural link building processes. After the sites are about a month old, I will increase the backlinking velocity, and after they are about three months old I don’t worry too much about how many backlinks I throw at them at one time (as long as they have a nice diversity already showing).

Here is how I am going about backlinking my new sites:

Month One

In the first month after I build the site, I use EzineArticles and TheLinkJuicer for building backlinks. I aim to post at least one article a week to EzineArticles, and in the resource box aim one link to the main page and one link to one of the secondary pages. Since most of these websites have at least five pages of supplemental content, I need at least five EzineArticles to link each supplemental page once.

EzineArticles usually does the trick for getting my pages indexed and ranking initially, and I also social bookmark the articles as well to make sure they get found and to give them a little more “juice” as well. Right now I’m using the free version OnlyWire to do my social bookmarking, although I have my eyes on BookMarkingDemon and hope to purchase it in the next month or so (not an affiliate link since I haven’t used it yet).

Next, I set up a campaign for each of my websites using TheLinkJuicer. I will set the campaign to create two new links a day to my new websites. This is a nice, slow link velocity that will not cause the site to “dance” around or incur any penalties. Mostly these are social bookmarking type of links, but there will also be a few blog posts and downloadable books as well, so it’s a nice diverse mix of links coming from TheLinkJuicer campaign.

Month Two

This month I will ramp up my backlinking effort, using Unique Article Wizard. I will submit one article to UAW that I will aim to get going out to at least 900 article directories and blogs at a rate of 30 a day. This will only provide a link back to the main keyword and one supplemental keywords, however.

I will also start creating some profile links to the main website – usually only around 50 during the second month, and allow my LinkJuicer campaign to continue to run at the rate of two links a day. Both the UAW submissions and the profile links may cause some “dancing” – but this won’t concern me too much at this point.

Month Three

During my third month, I will ramp up my backlinking efforts even more. I will create another couple of UAW campaigns, pointing links to my main page and more of my supplemental pages, create a couple hundred more profile links, and also do some article submissions to Article Blueprint and Free Traffic System (usually I use the same spun articles I created for UAW for these submissions as well). Also, I will have my VA create some Blog Blueprint posts for my main keyword terms (20 posts for each term). At this point, the BBP posts often result in a huge jump in ranking since these links are from mainly high PR blogs. During some point in this month I will also stop my LinkJuicer campaign to allow new campaigns to run for other, newer websites.

Evaluation

At the end of the third month and into the fourth month I will evaluate how my site is doing and how many backlinks are showing. If it looks like the sites are responding well, I may put them into “maintenance mode” meaning I create a very slow UAW submission that will last over the next couple of months but continue bringing in a steady stream of backlinks. If it needs a serious kick in the pants, I might have my VA throw another 400 profile links at it plus more aggressive article directory submissions.

Other Elements of My Backlinking Strategy

I also use SeoFastIndexer to help get my backlinks indexed. I use this for all my LinkJuicer links (this is easy because TheLinkJuicer provides a list of all the links in a downloadable .csv file), all my forum profile links and many UAW links. I don’t do this for BlogBlueprint posts or FreeTrafficSystem posts since these networks don’t provide you with information about their blog network (although I do find some of these through pingbacks and google alerts). Article Blueprint does tell you which directories your article has been submitted to, but unfortunately doesn’t provide you with the actual links, and I’m usually too busy/lazy to go find the links myself at this point but I may put my VA to work doing this.

Beside SEOFastIndexer, I hope to have my own network of indexing blogs at work in the next month or so as well which I will use in conjunction with Backlink Indexer Express to also help make sure my backlinks get found and indexed by Google (otherwise your backlinks have little value).

I’ll report back in a few months on how this strategy is working for me. I’ve been doing something similar to it for a few months now, so I’m feeling pretty good about it, but I may decide to change things up as well if I see any problems developing.

Edit 9/5/2010: I’ve made a few changes to the services I’m using but not the overall plan. To start, I’m using Sick Submitter now to create profile links automatically (freeing up my VA to do other work instead), and I am now using Backlink Indexer Express (BIE) to help get my backlinks indexed. I’ve set up a small blog network (four .info blogs and one .com blog) for BIE, and it seems to be working great!

That’s a very nicely structured backlinking system. I wish I was as well organized myself!

Interesting about Link Juicer, I’ve never used it myself. Do you find it good value for money?

    Hi Des,

Thanks! I have been a little up and down regarding how much I like the LinkJuicer. Some people really love it, others hate it. You can read my previous full review of TheLinkJuicer here:

    http://passiveincomeonlineblog.com/the-link-juicer-my-review/

Right now, I’m actually seeing a lot of the links created when I first subscribed to TLJ showing up in YSE and they seem to be sticking as well (a problem Sara at Noteworthy Tips had when she used the system – she said all the links dropped away quickly). I will be sticking with TLJ for at least a couple more months to see if my links from it stick, but even if they don’t, I like how the slow velocity and diversity works for my new sites. Probably it’s not for everyone, but I like using it for my sites at this point. Thanks for stopping by!

Great post yet again! You really are so organised like Des said! At the moment I’m only following a small part of your plan (a couple of EZA articles in the first month then UAW). I have yet to figure out what more I need to do. I had a VA for a couple of months and noticed the profile backlinks did really help but I haven’t continued with it lately (though I bought the software to make it quicker so I’ll be getting back to it soon). Like you said, I also agree that diversity is so important.

Have you ever experimented in the past with less profile links etc and more content on Web 2.0 sites, article directories and so on? I am testing this now though unfortunately my test got interrupted by other work.

    Michelle,

Great breakdown of how you build links!

I think the key to actually getting the ball rolling on backlinking is to actually have a plan in place that you follow so that you don’t get off track.

In addition to building these types of links, I see that you didn’t mention anything about blog commenting or directory links? Have you ventured into these areas yet?

I was going to comment on how organized you are, but other beat me to it.

I started to draw up a backlinking plan but got distracted. When I worked a real J.O.B. I was usually quite organized but for some reason I seem to have ADD with IM. I keep being reminded of that when I read your posts.

Wow!  That’s an incredibly well laid out strategy and it seems pretty much foolproof.  Thanks a lot for the info.

I am trying hard to think what question to ask, but you spelled out your backlinking strategy so clear that I cannot come up with anything; thank you very much for sharing.Your plan seems very well structured; I especially like that you build the links slowly, over three months, mixing up different types of links and that you do not get sidetracked by a small Google dance.

Ruth - Thanks! Yeah, I should have mentioned web 2.0 sites and directories. I have used both in the past, although I am not doing either much right now. I do occasionally put up a hub or squidoo lens for a site that seem “stuck” in the rankings, and I do plan on doing more of this down the road. However, mainly I’m waiting until I can automate these web 2.0 sites. I think I hear JamestheJust yelling something about Magic Submitter over in the next state (LOL), but I’m probably going to wait until I can afford SE Nuke to help with this (my guess is that I’ll take it out for a test drive sometime in August). In terms of directories, I used to use DirectoryBot by Icansoft, but I have honestly not seem much come from my directory submissions and I don’t bother with them for right now.

Yolanda – I agree, having a system is key, and hopefully I can stick to it! In terms of blog commenting, I haven’t done much of this although I know it can be useful. I certainly don’t want to spam blogs with “Really like your site” kind of junk, but I do plan on getting scrapebox in a few weeks and will see if it can help me find some good do-follow blogs in niches I’m targeting. I’ll probably stick to manual, and hopefully useful, blog commenting once I’ve got a good list and my time will be the main constraint in terms of what I do with this.

Carrie – I imagine you probably come home exhausted from work and that that has more to do with it that an ADD-IM disorder :) . Anyway, hopefully my posts serve more to motivate than frustrate.

Barry – Glad you found the post of use.

Dan – Thanks as always for your kind comments.

On another note – I think summer has finally arrived to the Pacific Northwest. I had a wonderful day at the beach with my family today, and then came back home to two ClickBank sales made and over $10 in AdSense earnings (and the day isn’t even over yet!) :)
